Scott County Veterinary Clinic is a full-service veterinary hospital, including a pharmacy, a surgical suite with state-of-the-art technology, on-site x-ray capabilities, a supervised intensive care area, and boarding facilities.
Our team of veterinary technicians, assistants, management and customer service representatives are dedicated to creating a good experience for both you and your pet.
Dr. Karen Hancock Young, DVM
Veterinarian, Clinic Owner
Dr. Young is a native of Lexington, KY, where she grew up on a farm with lots of animals that she loved to care for. She decided at the age of nine that she wanted to be a veterinarian and never wavered from the path. Dr. Young graduated from Paul Laurence Dunbar’s Math, Science and Technology program in 2002 continuing her love of science and animals through her high school career. She then went on to acquire her Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science from the University of Kentucky in 2005 and her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2009. After graduating from veterinary school, Dr. Young worked in a busy mixed animal practice in Summerville, GA for almost 3 years before she had the opportunity to purchase Scott County Veterinary Clinic and move back to beautiful Central Kentucky.
She lives in Georgetown with her husband, Chad and her 2-year-old daughter, Lauren. Other, furrier family members include her sidekick and partner since the beginning of this veterinary journey, Toby Keith, a Jack Russell Terrier mix, and two cats, Linus and Winnie. Dr. Young can’t wait to meet you and your furry family members!
Dr. Emily Schell, DVM
Originally from Hershey, Pennsylvania, Dr. Schell acquired her Bachelor’s degree in Veterinary Sciences in 2017 from LMU. In 2022 she graduated from Lincoln Memorial University with her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine. Her passions include feline, and soft tissue surgery. She is looking forward to building bonds with her patients and their owners. In her spare time away from the clinic you can find her making art, and spending time with her three felines Terra, Melanie, & Lewis.
Dr. Audrey Emery, DVM
Dr. Emery was born and raised in Butler, Kentucky. She acquired her Bachelor’s degree in Veterinary Sciences from Morehead State University in 2018. In 2022 she graduated with her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Lincoln Memorial University. Dr. Emery has always known that animals were a big part of her life. In high school & undergrad she shadowed mixed animal clinics learning all she could to further her passion for wound care/healing and ultrasonography. When not at the clinic you can find her riding horses, barrel racing/pole bending, and spending time with her husband taking care of their cow-calf farm with their canine Max, and two felines George & Annabelle.
Jenni Norman joined our team in March 2022. She has been in the veterinary field since 2003 and is originally from Chattanooga, TN. Jenni’s experience includes working in general, emergency and specialty referral practices. She is a Certified Veterinary Business Leader & Human Animal Bond Certified and is working towards her CVPM certification. She is excited to help our clients here at Scott County Veterinary Clinic and their furry loved ones. Jenni lives in the Lexington area with her two dogs Daizy & Mr. Dandy Bottompants. When not at the clinic she enjoys crafting, singing, swimming, and reading.
Tammy Washburn, LVT
Licensed Veterinary Technician
Tammy Washburn grew up in Central Florida, and upon graduating from the University of Florida in 1993, she moved to Kentucky. In 1996, Tammy attended Morehead State University where she obtained her veterinary technician license. She currently lives in Stamping Ground with her husband, two horses, and a cat. In her free time, Tammy enjoys volunteering with the Kentucky Wildlife Center and Scott County Girl Scouts.
Mary Cornell, LVT
Licensed Veterinary Technician
Mary was born in Fort Dodge, Iowa. She attended Morehead State University where she acquired her veterinary technician license. Over the years she practiced in Equine & Emergency medicine. Her passion is educating owners on the importance of routine and regular care for their pets. In her spare time she is devoted to her family with her husband, two girls, her dog named Colt & Ebony. On her days off you can find her gardening and taking care of their farm pets.
Krista Berwanger, LVT
Licensed Veterinary Technician
Krista was born in Georgetown Kentucky. She grew up in Stamping Ground Kentucky and has always been an animal lover. Krista graduated from Scott County High School in 2003 and moved to North Carolina for a few years after that. In 2004 she became a mother, she now has 3 daughters whom she loves dearly.
In 2011 Krista made her way back home. She was ready for her next journey in life and decided to attend Morehead State University. In 2019 she graduated with an Associates’s degree in Veterinary Technology and became an LVT. 2019 is also when she married her love, Brian. Together they live in Sadieville with their 3 daughters(Lillie, Alyssa, and Emma), 2 dogs (Kane and Pip), and 3 cats (Declan, Eclipse, and Cheeto).
Amanda was born and raised in Lexington, Kentucky, graduating from Lafayette High School. She studied criminal justice at Eastern Kentucky University to become an Animal Control Officer. After her college career, she started working at the Lexington Humane Society and Lexington-Fayette Animal Care & Control. While working at Animal Care & Control, she decided that she wanted to get into small animal medicine and enrolled in the Penn Foster Veterinary Technician program. When Amanda is not at work, she enjoys spending time with her spouse and their two fur children; Ghost, an American Bulldog/ American Pit Bull mix, and Princess Leia, a Basenji/ Husky mix. And they have a turtle named Jack! She also enjoys spending time with her family, hiking, going to the movie theater, and caring for and tending to her plants.
Madison is one of our veterinary assistants and is one of the first faces you see when you visit our clinic. She graduated from Scott County high school in 2018 and has a love for all animals, although her favorite are hedgehogs! She has three of them, along with two cockatiels and a green cheek conure. She is currently attending BCTC and plans on transferring to Morehead University within the next few years to become a certified vet tech. She has always had a calling to take care of animals. Her dream is to work either at a rescue center or an animal rehabilitation facility. We are so glad to have Madison as part of our team.
Izzy joined our team in May 2022. She is a native of Paris, KY, and previously worked in construction general contracting. This is not her first time however working with animals. Izzy cared for farm animals/pet sitting, trained horses, and gives riding lessons. She is passionate about providing quality care for clients and their pets. When Izzy is not working she enjoys training/riding horses, cooking, and spending time with family & friends.
Olivia was born and raised in Georgetown, KY. She joined our team in June 2022 and is currently attending Penn & Foster College to get her license in Veterinary Technology. Olivia has always loved animals and has past experience working as a kennel technician. In her free time she loves spending time with her friends, family, playing the drums and loving on her dog named Aurora.
Landon is from Paris, Kentucky, and has been in the veterinary field since 2020. Landon started working in the kennels and excelled with his patient care to eventually become a veterinary assistant. His expertise is in taking care of patients. “I cannot imagine my life without having animals around me.” When not at work you can find him spending time with his Great Dane Ellie, pitbull Harper, bowling, hiking, and hunting.
Jackie grew up in Enniscorthy, Ireland from where she graduated high school. She then moved to Kentucky to pursue working with horses for 20 years. From there she started working in small animal care throughout the US and eventually ended up back in Kentucky living with her husband, dog, and two cats. She joined our team and we are so lucky to have her here to take care of our boarding facility and to give your pet great care while you are away!
Shannon was raised in Greensburg, Indiana. She has worked as a kennel manager for over 11 years in the same location before moving back to Kentucky. She provides excellent care to our boarding pets while keeping the area spotlessly clean and organized. Shannon graduated from Ivy Tech College as a medical assistant but her passion has always been taking care of animals. She is married to Scott Dickson, and has 2 sons, Chase and Colten. In her spare time she enjoys spending time with family and her two awesome labs, Duke and Lucy.
Customer Service Representative
Marissa grew up in Taylor Mill, KY. Starting in the field in 2018, Marissa’s career in the veterinary field has given her extensive experience in multiple areas of a small animal hospital. Originally she attended the University of Cincinnati for Veterinary Technician and Ashworth College but has chosen to take time off to welcome her first child with her fiancé in Sadieville, KY. In her spare time, Marissa enjoys animal rescue, cleaning/organizing, landscaping, and hunting & fishing. Her beloved pets at home include 2 dogs named BJ, Tasha and 4 cats named Creature, Critter, Shrimp, Scampi as well as a lizard named Ambrose.
